The phrase "mad as a hatter" originates from the 19th-century practice of using mercury in the felt-making process to create hats. Hatters were exposed to mercury vapors, leading to mercury poisoning, which caused neurological damage and exhibited symptoms like tremors, irrational behavior, and speech difficulties, giving rise to the association of hatters with madness.
